KEEP felicitates Mr. Doug Scott
On March 29, 2010, KEEP felicitated Mr. Doug Scott, CBE of Community Action Network, UK, one of the keen supporters and life members of KEEP, in appreciation for his remarkable effort and contribution to the establishment of the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) in 1992 and Porters’ Clothing Bank (PCB) in 2009. His support was instrumental in the expansion and overwhelming success in fulfilling the organization's mission. The certificate of appreciation was conferred to honour and recognize his devotion, guidance and assistance bestowed to KEEP.
RAW Travel
In association with seven volunteers of RAW Travel, Australia, KEEP carried out a Community Development project at Shree Bhimdev Primary School, Nayapati, Gokarna in March. The volunteers helped with construction of the school toilet, colouring the school wall and painting the doors and window frames.

Porters’ Clothing Bank gearing up for peak season
The PCB is preparing for the upcoming trekking high-season from March to May. PCB Manager Mr. Ngima Pakhrin has completed a full inventory of all stock and, for a nominal cleaning charge, is ready to loan basic yet vital clothing and equipment to porters employed by independent trekkers or small trekking agencies. KEEP at PATA conference in
Kathmandu
In February the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) invited KEEP to host a stall at their Adventure Travel & Responsible Tourism Conference at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza hotel. Delegates and journalists from across the world attended the week-long event and KEEP was on hand to distribute information about responsible eco tourism and showcase recent activity, including the PATA supported Responsible Trekking for Waste Management in Tamang Heritage Trail project.
Antipodeans Abroad GapBreak Program 2010 successfully concluded
Gappers have successfully completed Gapbreak Program 2010 from April 21 to July 14, 2010. As a joint venture with Antipodeans Abroad (Australia), the “Volunteer Program 2010” was set up by KEEP at Shree Buddha Lower Secondary School, Tikabhairav and Shree Maneshwori Primary School, Lele. This project was undertaken in collaboration with the School Management Committees (SMC) with the participation of 5 students from Australia. Similarly, volunteers were placed at the orphanage called Children off the Streets, Machhegaun, Kritipur. Find out more.
KEEP completes Waste Management project on Tamang Heritage Trail
In January we completed a nine month Responsible Trekking and Waste Management projectin the Tamang Heritage Trail. The project investigated waste management practices in the region and then tailored an education and capacity building program to address the gaps. Find out more
First aid training for guides
On January 14 expedition leaders from India, Nepal and Bhutan took part in a six day Wilderness first aid course. Dr Romeo Kansikar, Chief Instructor, and his team led the course held at Highland Excursions’ premises in Panipokhari, Kathmandu funded by World Expeditions (Australia) and Highland Excursions (Nepal). In February 26 people attended a three day intensive first aid course at Durbar Hotel in Kathmandu including participants from UK, Australia and India. English Language Course students help with Ratna Park clean-up
On 7 January 2010, 34 students from the tourism industry successfully completed KEEP’s four week winter program of English Language Courses (ELC) in Kathmandu. Three international instructors, Mrs. Kay Sherpa, Ms Leonie Lockwood and Ms Brienda Stewart taught three different levels of the course. During the course all the students and teachers involved took part in a clean-up campaign at Ratna Park in association with Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Our thanks go to Beatrice and George Jost for their continued support for the ELC.
OzQuest Community Development project
Five volunteers from Australia carried out a Community Development project at Shree Maneshwari School from 30 December to 4 January.
The volunteers helped with construction work on the school compound and linked the front gate to the road with stone stairs, coloured the school wall and painted the doors and window frames. Click here to download the program report
